Buying a US Savings Bond Online
SavingsBonds.com is sorry to report...

...that the "Savings Bonds Direct" government web site for purchasing U.S. Savings Bonds Online with credit cards is no longer available.

After four years of service the government has decided to discontinue this service.
  • Why is the U.S. Government no longer accepting credit cards for payment? - Using credit cards to purchase paper bonds online was intended to be an interim solution. By eliminating credit card processing costs, the U.S. Government is able to minimize the cost of the savings bonds program to Treasury, and therefore, to taxpayers.

  • Now that Savings Bonds Direct has closed, where can I purchase paper savings bonds? - You can purchase paper EE and I Bonds through participating, local financial institutions. Although the Treasury's long-term goal is to stop issuing all paper securities, a date hasn't been announced yet.

Information on this page has been taken from the u.s. government press release - http://www.publicdebt.treas.gov/ols/olshome.htm - POSTED DEC. 30TH 2003
