Topic #2: Should the Gov. buy a $5,000 Baby Bond for every child born in the United States?

NY Senator and Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton has proposed on Sept 28th that every child born in the United States should get a $5,000 ''baby bond'' from the gov. to help pay for costs of college or buying a home. What do you think?

In a country where the cost of education and health are the burdens of the "citizens" (unless you are indigent), YES, I believe the "baby bond" is an excellent idea. With, of course, some kind of restriction on the use of said bond...say, limited to continuing education (including trade schools) or extreem medical. I just wish they had had that in place when I was raising my 6 children who have had to pay their own college expenses because we generated enough income to house, feed, clothe and give them medical attention....not to mention co-signing for college expenses!! Let's contribute towards the education & health of our future. 10/25/2007 2:15 PM

...i have professed this for years but all who i discussed accused me of being a socialist ... go for it ... the net benefit would offset any down sides 10/24/2007 11:29 PM

Not the Government - but the parents should - if they are citizens. This is for the childs' future. 10/24/2007 4:30 PM

I'm for it IF ONLY the parent(s) ARE citizens. It should not be given to kids of illegal immigrants. But, how is it going to be paid for. We don't need to get taxed more for this program. 10/23/2007 4:40 PM

As most liberal thinking this is a wonderful thought, but how do we pay or who pays for this. DEMs and REPs would force this program as they have in the past on the lower class, the middle class. Get real and promote American business to provide decent wages and wages for the working poor[MIDDLE CLASS]. Amen 10/23/2007 2:28 PM

I suppose this would include "illegal aliens" -that would just be another incentive for them to cross the border. If they were given the bond, the college tuition would just increase so that it would not be of any significent value. 10/22/2007 3:12 PM

no! the current economy situation of the country is bad enough to add another burden. This is a great country with lots of resources. There is no reason for this to happen. We just have to teach our children to work hard and handle their finances in a disciplined manner!!!!! 10/19/2007 10:29 AM

NO!!! We don't need to put this additional burden on the government, i.e.; we taxpayers. Social Security needs to be fixed first and without raising our taxes. 10/18/2007 2:40 PM

30 kathy That is just about the craziest thing I've ever heard of. We're not living in a Socialist country. If someone wants to go to college, they can pay for it themselves - or take out a loan. This sounds like buying votes to me. 10/18/2007 11:46 AM

I think that would be a wise investment in our most precious resource. I think if a limitation on the cashing in of the bond can be in place, then I am all for it. 10/18/2007 11:30 AM

If an I-bond is issued in the baby's full name only as the primary holder will prevent misuse of the money by family relatives. General health care for the young and old population is still a major government issue that may outweigh giving out savings bonds to babies. 10/18/2007 7:42 AM

33 629 that is the stupidest thing i have ever heard! bonds are supposed to be a way the govt gets money , its not a way they can spend it. they are already spending enough money on the war in iraq. why dont you work on paying that off rather than give money away?? 10/17/2007 5:56 PM

How are we paying for that one Hillary? Raise taxes for the middle class again. And what's going to happen to that money if a child dies? Hey, people on welfare here's an opportunity to make more money just pop out a few more kids that the tax money are already paying for. How about you lower my taxes so I can put money away for my own kids. 10/17/2007 11:58 AM

Absolutely not. What she is advocating is creating a socialistic state. We have enough free give away programs for people who refuse to take responsibility for themselves and want to depend on the government to take care of them 10/16/2007 11:21 AM

36 Milly No I certainly don't agree with Hillary Clinton Let their parents start paying for their college when they are born. 10/16/2007 10:55 AM

Senator Clinton is just a nut case trying to give other peoples money away. It could only be paid for by increased taxes. 10/16/2007 8:33 AM

I think that american cicizens should be able to be buy savings bonds with out paying tax on the intrest. with a limit on the amount you could buy. giving someone money that is able or will be able to earn their way is wrong. 10/15/2007 11:21 PM

39 John I want know if Hillary has requested this survey using Govt funds, people, and time using Taxpayer's money? I do not want any of my taxes to go for direct payments to babies. This stinks like a "buy your vote" plan. We cannot have anymore giveaways by Congressmen, candidates, or Presidents. Just like another Al Gore fuel oil giveaway during the his "candidacy." Get rid of all "pork". Stop being the solution for peoples bad mistakes, lack of education, lack of motivation, and "give my what I want" attitudes. 10/15/2007 9:25 AM
